Biochar Production
Biochar Production: Scaling Carbon Removal from the Ground Up
Biochar is one of the most effective, science-backed carbon removal solutions in the fight against climate change. When applied to soil, biochar not only sequesters carbon for hundreds to thousands of years, but also significantly improves soil health by enhancing organic carbon content, water retention, and microbial activity — all of which contribute to increased crop yield and long-term soil fertility.
Krushi Sarathi: India’s Largest Artisanal Biochar Movement
At Krushi Sarathi, we are pioneering a scalable and community-driven model for biochar production at the grassroots level. In our very first year, we:
- Produced over 12,000+ tons of artisanal biochar
- Processed 40,000+ tons of agricultural biomass, primarily cotton stalks
- Trained 600+ rural artisans across Vidarbha and Marathwada
- Created a circular economy model that benefits both farmers and the climate
Our goal is ambitious: 100,000+ tons of artisanal biochar in the upcoming year, leveraging over 20 lakh acres of cotton-growing land in Maharashtra. This scale is achievable through our extensive rural network and active collaborations with carbon project developers.
Trusted Implementation & Distribution Partner
We are the on-ground implementation partner for multiple biochar carbon credit initiatives, including with leading climate-tech firm Varaha.earth. In addition:
- We operate as Operations & Maintenance (O&M) partners for industrial biochar facilities
- We are a biomass aggregation partner, targeting 100,000+ tons of biomass annually
- We serve as a biochar distribution partner to farmers, promoting its adoption through training and field-level support
